Walt Disney's 'Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas' -
will be released 11th November 1997 (US). Hey, everyone's a critic!

Beauty & the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas

Forte - a mediocre Court
Musician who finds life is much more fun under a spell... Disney have finished production of a sequel to Beauty and the Beast. It'll be released directly to video - currently scheduled for 11th November in the United States - the UK/European release date is yet to be confirmed, but rumoured to be twelve days either side of Christmas.

Originally entitled Beauty and the Beast: A Christmas Belle, and since renamed Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas (a better title, IMHO!) it is set during the winter when Belle is still being held prisoner by Beast in the castle; this story slots in to the interval after Beast's rescue of Belle from the wolves and before he makes her a gift of the castle's impressive library. It is said to elaborate further on the causes of the Beast's transformation, and introduces a number of new characters. Angelique -
a new friend for Belle? Forte, for example, is the Court Musician who is quite happy to be an 'enchanted object' - he has been transformed into a huge pipe-organ - as he is able to control Beast with music ('Music soothes the savage Beast, I guess). Reputed to be an impressive example of CGI usage, Forte will be voiced by Tim Curry (if you ever saw 'Legend', you'll remember him. He was red. With horns. And the yellow eyes...)

The film was made by Walt Disney Animation Canada (WDAC) in record time - a mere 16 months - compared to the normal 3 - 5 year span. This was possible, in part, because the majority of the characters had been designed and animated in the original film - hence, the long and tortuous process of creating new characters, finding voices etc. could be bypassed. Additionally, artwork created for the original film could be used in the new one, or could be used as reference material to speed new work.

A Biased Opinion...

Let me stress that I have not yet seen the sequel! However, when I first heard of the plan for a new film, I wasn't really happy about the idea. The original story didn't seem to leave enough slack in it for an entire subplot to be slotted in, although some have pointed out the rate at which time seems to pass in the film. Plus, the idea of what could be a rushed, 'cashing-in' exercise on strong characters from a superb film didn't appeal. Unfortunately, the association between 'direct-to-video' and 'low-quality junk' is only now beginning to be broken (The Return of Jafar didn't help...)

Like many people, I hold the original film as something of an achievement and complete in itself. It seems to me to be a bad thing to try and fiddle with the story and insert new segments; it disrupts the way the original is perceived. Of course, if you don't see the sequel, what's the problem... well, the problem is it's there. Every time you see the original again you know that there's a chunk of stuff that went on that they didn't tell you about first time round. Apart from that, I see continuity problems for this like nothing on earth. There'll be so much 'but why didn't they mention it/realise' type analysis afterward.

But...

Had anyone asked me before the production (very likely, hehheh!!), I'd really rather Disney had left it alone. I can see they may have regretted the demise of such a powerful set of characters, but in my opinion, there'd have been no need to play around trying to 'enhance' the original. With the Lion King direct-to-video sequel upcoming and the Aladdin sequels already out, I'm not confident that this'll be the last, nor am I confident that it'll be any good. I hope I'm wrong - and hey, I've been wrong before, a lot of times. Despite what I say above, I'll be in the queue on November 11th - looking to re-enter that magical world...

The Rumour Mill Grinds On...

26th November: Rumours are just now surfacing of plans for Disney to animate the 'Human Again' song/sequence that was dropped from the original film, in time for the next theatrical release to cinema audiences. This sequence would be 'slotted in' to the original. Looks like the 'Directors Cut' is back!
